New ship motors will come with some sort of warranty which protects the purchaser from manufacturer’s defects.  A defective motor which is under warranty will be either repaired or replaced freed from charge.  Most used boat motors will not be covered by a warranty.  If you get a used ship motor which wants repairs you will be stuck with the bills.  Your best shot is to purchase a used boat motor from a reputable dealer.  If buying your used boat motor from a web auction site it’s best to stick with sellers who have an outstanding feedback rating and plenty of transactions. 

If the used ship motor is presently attached to a boat it makes sense to see it in action.  Take it for a test where you can actually see what it can do.  Ask the owner about any fresh work or repairs that have done to the motor.  It’s best if you can see copies of the work orders and invoices to get a real sense of the type of work that was required.  Always look meticulously at the condition of the motor before you purchase.  Look for signs of wear, welding, dents, gouges, and any other abnormalities.  You also wish to have a compression test to check the cylinders.
